Surveillance

With the aid of of the Disease Control office, the Epidemiology unit of the Public Health Department monitors sentinel provider ILI data as well as line lists from the Santa Barbara County hospitals and emergency room information. For this reason, it is very important to correctly fill-in case information as accurately as possible in a timely fashion regardless if you are reporting by phone, paper or electronically. This data allows the public health department to gauge an accurate assessment on influenza activity in the county and make strategic preparations if there is an observed influx in the data.

Reporting

Similarly to monitoring other reportable disease outbreaks, please fill out and fax a Confidential Morbidity Report (CMR) to the Disease Control Office (fax 805-681-4069). Unless advised by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, only submit the CMR for ICU and fatal cases of influenza-like-illness.

Influenza-like-illness (ILI) is defined as:

Fever ≥ 100 ˚F (37.8 ˚C) oral

PLUS cough and/or sore throat (in absence of other known causes).
